Privacy.

Your thoughts live on your devices. Margin has no account and does not provide a hosted capture or transcription service.

On your iPhone

Notes, recordings, drafts and imported files are stored in the app’s storage on your iPhone. The microphone is used only when you choose to record. You can write notes without microphone permission.

Margin Capture includes no advertising, tracking or third-party analytics SDK. It does not upload your captures to the developer or call an AI service.

When you connect a folder

Choosing a transfer folder allows Margin to copy notes and recordings into that folder so your Mac can receive them. If you choose iCloud Drive or another cloud file provider, that provider handles the transfer under your account and settings. Your Mac processes recordings while Margin is open.

The Mac can share project names and recent sources back to your phone. Full library sharing is a separate choice: it can include source text, Trash, personal research notes and cached findings. Treat the selected folder as private.

On your Mac

Recording and transcription use your Mac by default. If you configure a remote processing server, agent connection or AI provider, the content you choose to make available can leave your Mac for that destination. Video research sends public video transcripts to the provider you configure; private notes and meetings are excluded from that research adapter.

Importing a video contacts the video provider to retrieve captions or audio. Update checks contact GitHub with Margin’s version and your macOS version. The landing page’s data-flow table describes these routes.

Keeping and removing copies

Phone captures remain until you delete them from Your captures. Copies already transferred to your Mac, a shared folder or a backup are separate. Disconnecting a folder stops future sync; it does not erase those existing copies.

Turning off full library sharing removes the Mac-owned shared copy on the next sync. The phone clears its full-library cache after receiving that change. Moving a Mac source to Trash keeps it recoverable. Manage copies on each device, in the shared folder and in backups separately.

You can disconnect transfer in the app and revoke microphone permission in iPhone Settings. Neither requires deleting your typed notes.

TestFlight and feedback

TestFlight and iCloud are Apple services with their own privacy practices. For questions about Margin, contact maxwell@ninetynine.digital or use Send Beta Feedback in TestFlight. Feedback you choose to send may include your message, contact details, screenshots or diagnostics through Apple’s service.

The website includes no analytics or tracking scripts. Its host, Vercel, receives the standard web requests needed to serve these pages.
